Britain’s Mo Farah continued his great run of form with an emphatic win in the 5,000m at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow on Friday.
The 30 year old, who had already won the 10,000m at the start of the event, clocked 13 minutes and 26.98 seconds to secure the title, becoming only the second man in history to complete an Olympic and world ‘double-double’ in the distance events.
Team USA successfully defended its title in the men’s 4×400m relay with David Verburg, Tony McQuay, Arman Hall and LaShawn Merritt completing the course in an impressive time of 2 minutes and 58.71 seconds to outclass Jamaica and Russia.
Germany’s David Storl retained his men’s shot put title at the Luzhniki stadium. Originally ruled a foul, the 23-year-old’s winning throw of 21.73 metres was later reinstated, assuring him the top spot ahead of American world indoor champion Ryan Whiting.
Local hope Aleksandr Menkov produced a superb display to clinch the men’s long jump. The 22 year old cleared 8.29 metres on his final attempt to outclass Ignisious Gaisah of the Netherlands while Mexico’s Luis Rivera had to settle for bronze.
Olympic champion Tatyana Lysenko of Russia set a world championship record to retain her title with 2009 gold medalist Anita Wlodarczyk and Zhang Wenxiu of China finishing second and third respectively.
Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce completed a spectacular sprint double as she added the 200m gold to the 100 she claimed earlier in the week.
With three-time world champion Allyson Felix abandoning in the early stages of the race due to a right leg injury, Ivory coast’s Murielle Ahoure held on for second place ahead of Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria.
